2015 Oolong Owl Tea Stash and Consumption Data

2015 was a busy year for me for teas. When 2015 started, I had pulled out my entire stash and entered it into a spreadsheet, down to each different tea bag and tea sample. I also tracked how much tea I drank, in grams, every day for the entire year. If you want to learn more about my spreadsheets – Tea Stash Spreedsheet | Tea Consumption Spreadsheet. Year has passed and I got all this data! Oolong Owl 2015 Tea Stash Data I’m starting 2016 with 596 teas! Actually, 5 hours before the new year I entered in a bunch of pu’er samples I forgot to… Continue reading, hoot!

2015 Autumn Misty Peak Sheng Pu’er – Tea Review

There was some drama with this 2015 Autumn Misty Peak pu’er cake. It was first out of the gate by a month or two compared to other tea sellers who do Autumn sheng pu’er. It was sold exclusively as being freshly picked and pressed, only a couple weeks old! To some, that sounds really cool. To others, they were wondering how they were able to ship it that fast out of China and how much moisture is in the tea. I had got this sample just after this cake came out. I was super curious about the new Misty Peaks pu’er and requested… Continue reading, hoot!

December 2015 White2tea club – Tea Review

It’s the best time of the month – White2tea Club time! This month is wintery theme teas. Oolong Owl theme – Crash and burn, just like me on the holidays. The holidays for me finally stopped smoking, emotionally and literally as I managed to set my oven on fire twice making yorkshire pudding, caught sausages on parchment paper on fire with a blow torch (don’t ask), and smoked out the neighbours multiple times with the BBQ, all in less than a week around Christmas! In this month’s box: 2009 Anhua Heicha 200g and 8 gram samples of White2Tea’s new Dahongpao and Rougui!… Continue reading, hoot!

2000 Fu Ding Bai Cha Aged White Tea Brick – Tea Review

My 2000 Fu Ding Bai Cha Aged White Tea Brick was my winning purchase from my trip home to Vancouver back in August at The Chinese Tea Shop. The price of this tea is on the high side for me (despite it being a big brick) but having to been able to drink it and enjoy it greatly, leading me to buy the entire brick. I hauled my brick to Alaska and returned home, taking off the wrapper and letting it sit until I felt like it was the best day to drink it. Aged white tea is something I’ve come… Continue reading, hoot!

Imperial Blend Hadong Green Tea from Wooree Tea – Tea Review

Yay a Korean tea review today! The tea is from Wooree tea, a New Zealand seller. Right now they just have tea ware and one tea – Imperial Blend Hadong Green tea. Imperial Blend Hadong Green tea is grown in the Hadong region in the south west as per the website. Looking around, all I can find is a university of the same name and nothing on the map. Maybe the area is spelled differently in English? Dry Leaf Imperial Blend Hadong Green tea looks like twisted waves of dark green and has a sweet spinach and light roasted scent. Steeping Instructions The steeping… Continue reading, hoot!

52 Teas 2015 Holiday Teas – Tea Review

52 Teas had a Holiday tea kickstarter a few months back and I was able to preorder for the entire set! All the teas sounded pretty good – Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, Eggnog Chai, Gingerbread Houjicha, Cranberry Orange Cider Rooibos, and Peppermint Marshmallow Melting in Hot Chocolate. It looks like you can still purchase the teas at 52 Teas from their Holiday Tea section, but you’ll want to act fast as they are seasonal teas. I wasn’t in a Christmas mood until this week, so now I finally got around to sampling the entire lineup (barring I drank 2 of… Continue reading, hoot!

Oolong Shalimar from Kent & Sussex Tea & Coffee Co – Tea Review

Today’s review is a tea from Kent & Sussex Tea & Coffee Co, a UK tea seller with a HUGE tea line up. I’m talking they got over 700 different teas and coffees, that’s bigger than my stash! (It crazy that I have bigger tea selection than many sellers!). They also do wholesale as well. The tea – Oolong Shalimar, is an oolong blend with half-fermented tea Aronia berries, Mango cubes, and Rose petals. Dry Leaf Wow that smell! Oolong Shalimar smells really strong, and of sweet dried fruit and floral. The oolong leaves are dark and a little twiggy, cut with rose petals, whole berries… Continue reading, hoot!

Libre Tea Infuser – Teaware Review

When I was at the World Tea Expo, I ran into Libre – makers are attractive Loose Leaf tea travel tea tumblers. They were super sweet to give me one to review here on Oolong Owl. Admittedly, I have a Libre already which I bought in 2010. I used it at everyday at work for over a year. Back then, it was the only good looking tea tumbler I could find in Canada. This glass has taken a beating and it shows. Back when I purchased this Libre, all they had was the metal lids and a few different sizes. Now… Continue reading, hoot!

Bonavita Variable Temperature Gooseneck Kettle 1-Liter – Teaware Review

Variable temperature kettles are the game changer in tea. Not all teas can be made with boiling water and if you are having issues with tea being really bitter, it is likely your water temperature is too hot. I find many black teas that are prone to bitterness do great at 200F, sometimes even 190F. Green teas need to be steeped with a cool water temperature of around 175F or they will be bitter, swampy and awful. Anyways, Variable Temperature Kettles are not cheap, so often people on tea forums are asking about which one is a good kettle. I have two… Continue reading, hoot!
