June 2020 White2Tea Club feat. 2020 Green Hype Sheng Puer

Another year, another Green Hype sheng puer in the White2Tea Club. Every year I enjoy Hype more and more. This sheng puer house blend always tastes good and is of good value (at this time, $38 for a 200gram cake), especially if you got it through the White2Tea club ($29.99, including shipping!). This month also included a 2020 Nightlife mini, but I set that tea aside for later.

Leaf and Steeping Method

2020 Green Hype’s leaves have a strong fuzzy peach aroma.

As usual, I did gongfu style, 1gram to 15ml ratio, steeped in boiling water. After a rinse, the leaves are still just as fruity smelling.

First, Second, and Third Infusion: I took a sip of the rinse and pressed on – Hype punches strong immediately with no rinse. 2020 Green Hype is potent in taste, fruity with a faint hint of bitter char at the end of the sip. The aftertaste is a lengthy lingering stone fruit flavor. The texture is slightly silky too.

Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Infusion: Green Hype is maximum intensity, tasting so fruity that it is bitter. I am thinking that the charred taste is some pan fried crispy bits as I can see it in the leaves. The aged material in this tea hides the young sheng so far, I don’t taste any vegetal notes, mostly high aroma stone fruit. Each steeping lightened in flavor after the fourth but stayed consistent in taste.

Seventh and Eighth Infusion: I believe all the material hit the wall here and now it went squeaky bitter and powdery dry. The bitterness is a bit stewy but also floral jasmine-like.

Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Infusion: I hit the end and this tea shifted in flavor drastically to be mineral sweet and stewy bitter parsley with a super dry mouth feeling. It lightens and minerally as the flavor slips, though you may not drink this far as the dryness is strong.

Comments

White2Tea’s 2020 Green Hype is a potently flavored fruity sheng with excellent lingering aroma and aftertaste. This puer resteeps well and likely will age well too.

I prefer potent young shengs, and this one would be my match for a good daily drinker that will punch back.
