November Simple Loose Leaf Tea Co-op Club – Tea Review

This is the first month of Simple Loose Leaf‘s new format – a Tea Co-op Club!

Every month you get 4 to 6 loose leaf tea samples (1/4oz size) – you get a wide assortment of different teas such as straight teas, blends and herbals. With being in the Tea Co-op, you get a membership ID. If you enjoy and want more tea that you’ve sampled, you can purchase it from the Simple Loose Leaf Tea Shop for 50% off. Looking at the shop right now, using the 50% off deal, you can get teas for $2.50 to $3.00 an oz, which is a pretty good deal.

For your first box, you can enter OolongOwl for a 50% off your first Simple Loose Leaf’s Tea co-op box!

Tasting of November’s Simple Loose Leaf Tea Co-op Teas

This month the teas are Kukicha Green, Four Horseman Black, Magnolia Oolong, Seven Seas Herbal and Large Leaf Chai.

Included in my box are a set of cloth infusers aka Tea Owl sleeping bags.

I had a giggle at the combination of Four Houseman Black and Seven Seas Herbal – I’m picturing a tea apocalypse of evil figures on horses and a kraken stealing all the tea.

I’m trying out Kukicha Green and Four Horseman Black. I’m passing on Seven Seas Herbal, as much as the concept of evil kraken tea amuses me, because of the 7 ingredients in this herbal I dislike 5 of them. The Magnolia Oolong smells great, but there isn’t enough in the sample to make a gong fu session.

Kukicha Green is a twiggy light green tea with a beautiful spring green colour.

I did a 2 minute infusion with 175F filtered water. Steeped up, Kukicha Green comes out a cool light green that looks like it could be a soda or funky fruit punch!

The flavor is light with steamed spinach, rice, sesame seeds and a savory finish, with a silky texture. This tea is really easy to drink without any dry or bitterness (especially if you follow the water temperature!) and low in caffeine. It is really cool Simple Loose Leaf has this green in the co-op this month as it is great tea to try if you are new to teas and want to expand your green tea tastes.

Four Horseman Black is a straight tea mix of Darjeeling 2nd Flush, Assam fine tippy golden flower orange pekoe, organic Keemun and Yunnan breakfast.

The flavor is very rich, malty, little smokey, bold with a smooth finish. This black tea blend would be great for a breakfast tea drinker, or someone new to tea from coffee wanted a tea with some muscle to it.

Comments

The new Simple Loose Leaf Co-op Club is a great tea box to try new teas, especially if you are a new tea drinker or someone who wants to get into tea and does western style brewing. There are also a few interesting teas for a more seasoned tea drinker. I do like the size of the samples, as you can try teas and not locked into owning a bunch of tea you don’t like. With the 50% off deal in the  Simple Loose Leaf Tea Shop you can buy of the tea you like.

I do miss the old format with the ability to choose my teas each month, but the Tea Co-op format is more of a deal.
