S’mores Genmaicha from 52 Teas – Tea Review

S’mores Genmaicha is a chocolate and marshmallow green tea blend from 52 Teas, an online tea seller that comes up with fun new blends each week.

Okay my tea peeps. I feel bad. This tea sold out but I’m still reviewing it. Hey, I bet it’ll get blended again hopefully. If it doesn’t I’m sure we’ll campaign and wishlist it until it does. As soon as I saw 52 Tea tweets that it was up, I bought myself a package without blinking an eye. When 52 Teas comes out with a tea you know you’ll like you buy it ASAP. If you sleep on it, it could be sold out.

Smore Genmaicha from 52 Teas - Oolong Owl Tea Review (1)ALL MINE! PRECIOUS!

I don’t think there is enough greens or whites that are chocolate flavored so a chocolate marshmallow green is awesome!

I’ve heard many Steepsters say they leave their 52 Teas a week or two to rest for the flavors to meld. You know what? I’M FREAKING IMPATIENT! My tea came from mail slot, to table, to photo’d while the kettle is doing its thing. Then steeped, photo’d again, and sipped!

I gotta drink this tea before Mr. Owly attacks and steals my bag!

DRY LEAF:  Smells really strongly like chocolate liquor. I can also smell that sticky brown top of roasted marshmallow! Maybe letting it sit for a week would be a good idea? PHFFFFFFFF!

Great appearance with S’more Genmaicha with toasted rice, tight dark green tea leaves, lumps of chocolate and torn rooty looking marshmallow root.

STEEPED: Smells deeply like chocolate is straight melted into my cup!

Of course, it isn’t a cup of pure chocolate – my tea is a light yellow green in my tea cup!

I steeped this tea for 2.5 minutes at 175F.

TASTE: DROOOOL! Very good! Tastes like dark chocolate melting all over the place, with marshmallow rooty floof fluttering about, with toasty rice flavor, that is quite savory, all with a backing of delicious genmaicha.  The toasty rice really adds to making this tea really taste like smores! There is a slight smokey taste, but it blends moreso with the roasty rice flavor. The tea is also slightly sweet from the chocolate. All this chocolatelyness I thought I should be leaving sticky chocolate fingerprints all over my tea cup! Great chocolately aftertaste that lingers too! FYI, no bitterness in S’mores Genmaicha.

If you have had 52 Teas Marshmallow Treat –  is fairly similar in marshmallow taste, but lacking in the crazy chocolate melted all over department of S’mores Genmaicha.

Sweetened with a little german rock sugar, this tea is even more smore tasting, if it wasn’t already close enough to smores. The chocolate is still the strongest flavor, backed with toasty rice. The marshmallow flavor teeters a bit to the side when sweetened, but comes out as an aftertaste. I prefer S’more Genmaicha without sweetener as I get more marshmallow flavor.

Even down to the last teeny sip, it was very chocolately. YUM!

I did another first steeping at 175 for 3.5 minutes and found the genmaicha green comes out more, humming with the chocolate and marshmallow flavors, with the tea being a little sweeter. I think any longer of a steeping would become bitter. I prefer the shorter 2.5 minute steep.

RESTEEP: 175F for 3 minutes (off my 175F 2.5 minute initial steep). I’m resteeping just because I have to know if I can stretch this tea out. The genmaicha is the first flavor – light, yet savory and little buttery green with a little soggy toasted rice. Hey, it’s a resteep! The end of sip is chocolately and marshmallowy that echos as an aftertaste. Not bad but kinda light and a little watery – maybe I should do a longer resteep time.

COMMENTS: I am now kicking myself. I SHOULD OF BOUGHT A SECOND PACKAGE OF S’MORES GENMAICHA! FFFFFFFFF!@#$%^&*!*@&*@&!!#$$!!! /faceroll

If you love chocolate teas and all these marshmallow teas that have been coming out lately, snag this one when it is in stock! You will be competing with me though – a tea nerd who spends most of her time on the computer.  I’ll be getting another bag as soon as I see it available!

BONUS S’MORES SHOT!
