Sunday Tea Hoots 16 – Moving Tea Woes

Hi Tea Readers! I just dropped my husband off, who is heading to Seattle to start his new job. I’m lurking back here in Long Beach to finish up the move, and in 2 weeks I’ll be in Seattle. I was pretty busy the last few weeks going through things worth moving, and visiting friends and family.

We went as far as driving up to Utah for a few days to see the Grandmother in Law. Black Tea Owl had a great time being on the road.

One of the huge stressful things about me moving is my tea, specifically the pu’er. I got around 66 cakes of pu’er, black, white and oolong. Whatever I’m not flying with will be sent to storage that I won’t have access to for over a month. I was not happy with the idea of leaving my pu’er in crocks, sitting in some warehouse for over a month.

I asked around for advice on reddit (thanks tea friends!), with the short time I had, I put my pu’er cakes into ziplock bags, grouped by type, then by seller.

Pretty generously we each got $100 worth of baggage fees covered, so I decided to have the pu’er fly up with my husband ahead of me. After bagging up everything, I managed to stuff everything except 3 white cakes in a single carry on suitcase, which weighed 33lbs.

It’s a tight squeeze, but at least it is all carry on and only trapped for a couple hours like that. I’m still sweating bullets until I hear tonight everything arrived okay in Seattle with my husband. On his end, he will separate the sheng from the shous.

Now for the rest of the tea (all 400+ of it), a lot of it will be stuck in storage. I decided I will plastic wrap all the tins shut, as when I moved from Canada to California I had issues with tea tins popping open and making a huge mess. I’m playing with the idea of flat rate shipping some, but it depends how much I can jam in my 4 suitcases.

Admittedly, there’s not much left for me to do over these 2 weeks, just me dealing with packing my own bags, sorting yarn, and dealing with the rest of my tea until the movers get here to pack everything. I got a lot of tea reviews drafted, so likely I’ll get more content scheduled out for a few weeks for buffer.
