Owl’s first tong – Bitterleaf Tea’s 2022 Body & Soul Black and Shou Puer

10 years of drinking puer and I never officially tonged, until this one tea. I’ve always enjoyed drinking something new. There are always new boutique blends coming. Each year and season is a new flavor. I also have no delusions that my puer cakes are reselling investments. But the day came – I tonged 2022 Body & Soul from Bitterleaf Teas. I just love Bitterleaf Tea’s Body & Soul blend, it is a shou and black tea blend. The 2020 Body & Soul I drank the sample and wish I got more. I have almost guzzled a whole 2021 cake… Continue reading, hoot!

Lo-Shan Hong Shui Oolong from Floating Leaves Tea

A few months back Floating Leaves Tea did a live stream tea tasting for their hong shui GABA oolong on their Facebook / Instagram. Prior to the live session, you can purchase the teas to drink with them – perfect for those not in Seattle or in quarantine. Floating Leaves Tea sent me the sampler, but I ended up drinking mine sometime later as I was sick. I then learned it is really hard to drink back to back multiple hong shuis, especially Floating Leaves Tea’s hong shuis, as they have high body feels. Either way, from that blind tasting… Continue reading, hoot!

2019 Spring Gao Shan Rou Gui Oolong from Old Ways Tea

The tea review for today is Old Ways Tea’s Spring 2019 Gao Shan Rou Gui. This Rougui sports a lighter roast and tea material from one of the higher altitudes in Wuyishan. Leaf and Steeping Method Gorgeous leaf, look at those fall colours! Far away, the tea smells like peanut shells, but when I jam my face in the leaves it smells like fruit leather. For gongfu ratio, I dumped the entire packet in my gaiwan, clocking in at 1 gram of leaf per 12.5ml of vessel size. From there, I steeped with boiling water. The hot leaf smells like… Continue reading, hoot!

White Night from Mandala Tea – Oolong Owl Tea Review

White Night Tea is a white tea sold by Mandala Tea, an Oolong Owl favorite US based tea seller. Tea peeps – this tea, White Night Tea, is processed in a certain way, encouraging it to age. With that said, in a few years, this white will become a black tea! SUPER HOOTY COOL! Mandala Tea has so many cool teas! Let’s jump right into tasting White Night tea with a new Tea Owl, Formal Night Tea Owl! Dry Leaf White Night tea has a pretty interesting dry leaf – it’s big, open leaf with some fuzzy hairs. Some of the leaves are silver, some black. The… Continue reading, hoot!

Goji Pop from DAVIDsTea – Oolong Owl Tea Review

Goji Pop is a herbal tea blend of apple, goji berries, hibiscus, roships, and honeydew. This caffeine free tea is from DAVIDsTea. Goji Pop is an Oolong Owl favorite. I’ve must of purchased this tea about 4 times now. I tried a sample of it and WOW very good! I then promptly bought a 100g tin worth and have been refilling it every since. Annoyingly, my local DAVIDsTea was always sold out of this tea, so I’ve bought it online most of the time. Dry Leaf Very chunky appearance. Lumps of apple, goji berries, and hibiscus that have petals stuck… Continue reading, hoot!

Milk Oolong Tea from Mandala Tea – Tea Review

Another Oolong Week tea! Go OOLONG WEEK! Milk Oolong is a high-end Taiwanese oolong from Mandala Tea.   Milk oolong is yet another tea type that I’ve had a couple times and wasn’t super impressed or blown away with. The first  milk oolong I tried was bland. The other milk oolongs I tried after that were okay and slightly creamy. I was looking around Steepster and noticed Mandala Tea‘s Milk Oolong was on the first page of being the “best tea” and one of the top rated Oolong teas. The reviews of Milk Oolong looked fantastic, so an ounce slipped into my Mandala Tea order. DRY LEAF: Looking at the… Continue reading, hoot!

Laoshan Black Chocolate Genmaicha from Verdant Tea – Tea Review

Laoshan Black Chocolate Genmaicha is a genmaicha blend from Verdant Tea. This blend features Verdant’s Laoshan Black, a little Shui Jin Gui Wuyi Oolong, hand crafted wild rice from Minnesota, and organic fair trade toasted jasmine rice. Oh, and organic cacao nibs. I really wanted to try Laoshan Black and this blend, but I was on a budget. So I opted to get an 1 oz of this blend, as I tend to drink more blends than straight unflavored teas. DRY LEAF: The tea smells like dark chocolate! Good dark chocolate, kinda like Lindt’s Dark Chocolate – Ohh yum, I love that… Continue reading, hoot!

Blushing Geisha from Steep City Teas – Tea Review

Blushing Geisha is a hibiscus floral green tea blend from Steep City Teas, one of my favorite online tea sellers. This tea caught my eye right away, but I was a little leery of it. It was expected, from the name, the tea would be red and hibiscusy. Many of us tea drinkers have been terrorized by over hibiscus – vibrant red tea that tastes so tart your throat has a spaz, and that was supposed to be “strawberry tea”? However, after having some of Steep City Teas stuff, I figure it had to be good. DRY LEAF: I opened the package, closed my eyes… Continue reading, hoot!

Three Friends from Butiki Teas – Tea Review

Three Friends is a black tea with orange, chocolate and marshmallow flavoring. This tea is from Butiki Teas. Okay, I am slightly biased here. I love Terry’s Chocolate Oranges. I’m homesick for Canada and my family, so the smell and taste of chocolate oranges bring me back to spending time with my Dad. He always gave me a chocolate orange for Christmas. The first time I got one, I was insistent I break it myself – but I was a pretty weak of a kid. Heck, despite all my brazilian jiu jitsu, my upper body strength is kinda crap. Dad… Continue reading, hoot!

Flowery Pineapple Oolong from Butiki Teas – Tea Review

Flowery Pineapple Oolong is a Wen Shan Bao Zhong oolong flavored with freeze dried pineapple. This tea comes from Butiki Teas. This tea is delicious and one of my favorites. With Butiki Tea orders, you can request samples – and this was one of the first samples I got. I held onto my sample for awhile, waiting for the right time to try it. Then after I tried it.. YUM! So I ordered more. Samples FTW! DRY LEAF: Chunky presentation here with the large lumps of oolong and bulky pineapple bits. Very nice! STEEPED: As I poured the tea from my… Continue reading, hoot!
