Crimson Lotus Tea’s 2022 Night Shift is a shou puer blended to be mysteriously dark and creamy tea.
The wrapper features Aztec style artwork by Seattle artist Jose Rodriguez III.
Leaf and Steeping Method
The leaf has earthy and hot dirt in a muddy summer scent.
As usual, I went gongfu style with 1 gram of leaf per 15ml ratio, 2 rinses, steeped with boiling water. After the rinses, the tea shifted to an almond nutty scent.
Tasting of 2022 Night Shift Shou Puer from Crimson Lotus Tea
First, Second, and Third Infusion: Night Shift is a silky textured tea with a buttery lip. Flavorwise, Night Shift is milky, nutty almonds, and chocolate, with hints of vanilla and mineral rock sugar. The aftertaste has a bit of floral.
Fourth and Fifth Infusion: Lovely inky colour!
There’s a lot going on in this tea, some sips have red brick tastes. Night Shift is toeing into bittersweet chocolate, nuts, and rock sugar. This tea is dense too, it’s like I’m drinking a heavy breakfast (as I say this, I am drinking this in the morning with no food in me).
Sixth and Seventh Infusion: Night Shift is lightening here and tastes of light chocolate, faintly vanilla, with more mineral bricks and rocks. Each steeping gets very light, tasting of watery chocolate and rock sugar, losing the earthy notes. I feel like I’m getting heartburn drinking this, it’s a chonky tea.
Comments
Crimson Lotus Tea’s 2022 Night Shift is a dessert shou that is dense, with some complex subtle flavors swirled in like bricks, floral, vanilla, and minerals. It is an approachable shou but has the complexity and body feel for seasoned tea drinkers.
(Tea obtained by trading for homemade sausages… LOL yeah I am serious)
