Bruu Tea Club is based in the UK. For £10 a month, or cheaper if you subscribe for 3-12 months, (add £2.99 for outside UK shipping) you get three loose leaf teas a month and a little surprise. The tea club is personalized with your preferences with an algorithm. You can also purchase teas from Bruu, at this time I counted 67 teas to choose from.
Unboxing of Bruu Tea Club
Bruu Tea Club came with 3 teas, clocking in around 14 grams each. Also included was a tea ball strainer and vegan gluten free milk chocolate (for Easter).
Tasting of Bruu Tea Club
Famous White Dragon
Bruu Tea’s Famous White Dragon is a Bai Mu Dan (White Peony) white tea blend also featuring Sencha and Kukicha green tea. It is blended with Dragonfruit, Lemongrass, Kiwi, Raspberry, Pomegranate. The dry leaf smells like kiwi candy.
I ended up steeping Famous Dragon for around 45 seconds to get the taste I like. I also used more leaf than recommended, 3.5grams for an 8oz/225ml mug.
Famous Dragon has a strong fruity flavour of kiwi and mystery berries. The longer infusion brought out more of tea flavour over the added flavouring. The base is grassy tasting since it has Sencha and Kukicha, with a juicy background from the Bai Mu Dan white tea. There is some astringency, but that is might fault due to the longer infusion gamble. Dragonfruit is such a subtle flavour so I scratch my head at companies that shove it into a tea. It is surely for exotic points.
BlueiBos
BlueiBos is a red rooibos blend with honeybush tea, fennel, cornflower, and natural flavouring. The dry leaf smells strongly like citrus and berries.
I followed the steeping instructions, though I used 4 grams of leaf for 8oz. The flavour of BlueiBos is strongly blueberry with the added sweetness from the fennel. As I sip, I can smell the blueberry flavour rising up from the cup adding to the flavour experience. This rooibos blend is actually delicious, and this is coming from someone who dislikes rooibos due to its woody and watery nature.
Lockheart Gold
Lockheart Gold is a breakfast black tea from Lockheart Tea Estate in South India. No flavourings or anything added to this tea.
I steeped 4 grams, boiling water, for 1.5 minutes. I don’t think Lockheart Gold needs sugar as it is sweet on its own with a malty earthy with a soft fruity profile. The flavour intensity is strong and clean. It has a light powdery texture, luckily I had managed to dodge any stronger astringency. This was a nice change of pace compared to the other teas which are heavily flavoured. If you steeped it more heavy-handed, you’ll probably want to add milk and sugar.
Comments
Overall, Bruu Tea Club has good value if you want to try a variety of tea that is flavoured while dipping your toes into unflavored tea. Their flavour tea options are fun and unique compared to other tea companies and clubs. Bruu Tea is heavy handed in their flavourings, making it perfect for those who are new to tea, making the switch from sugary drinks or love iced teas.
