2021 June Old Ways Tea Club feat. Tai Ping Hou Kui

The 2021 June Old Ways Tea Club came early for me, landing in late May. This club was sent out a bit early due to it containing some fresh Tai Ping Hou Kui. Also in the club is Yu Qilin and a Shui Xian. 2021 Tai Ping Hou Kui from Old Ways Tea Club I thought I was safe from more green tea this year, but I was not. Thankfully, Tai Ping Hou Kui is the least offense green tea to me (matcha is the exception of course). However, I love Tai Ping Hou Kui for the wild appearance of… Continue reading, hoot!

2021 April Old Ways Tea Club

It is Old Ways Tea Club time! The fourth tea club box has 2020 Shi Ru Stone Milk, 2014 White Tea Brick, and 2020 Niu Rou Huang Pian – 2 oolongs and a white tea! I was most excited about the white tea and the huang pian. 2020 Shi Ru (stone milk) Oolong Well, I was dumb and the package exploded when I opened the tea packet. The leaves here have a roasted caramel and plum scent. Both oolongs in the club I went with a gongfu ratio of 1gram of leaf per 15ml of vessel size, steeped in boiling… Continue reading, hoot!

2021 February Old Ways Tea Club

For the 2021 February Old Ways Tea Club box we got three teas: 2020 Zhengyan Rou Gui, 2020 Mom’s Pick Teji Rou Gui, and a big bag of 2020 Winter tea. Let’s start drinking! 2020 Zhengyan Rou Gui Cutting open the tea package releases a strong roasted and nutty scent. Zero hoots were given, so I filled the gaiwan, so my gongfu ratio clocked in at around 1 gram per 12.5ml for all these teas unless otherwise noted. After a rinse, the hot leaves have a sweet nutty scent. I had a problem pegging down this tea, it is so… Continue reading, hoot!

2020 December Old Ways Tea Club

This is the second box of the Old Ways Tea Club! In the 2020 December Old Ways Tea Club is 6 teas. I am happy this club is every two months, as it gives me plenty of time to drink it all! Also included is a bag of dried persimmons. It was very hard for me to keep this around long enough to photograph! The majority of the December Old Ways Tea club is made up of 8 gram packets, so I used 8 grams in a 100ml gaiwan. The Hongcha is in 5 gram packets, which I used a… Continue reading, hoot!

Old Ways Tea Club – 2020 October

The first ever Old Ways Tea Club box! This tea subscription is every two months, started in 2020 October. Old Ways Tea says on average each box will have 125 grams of tea, priced at $45, including shipping. Primarily, the Old Ways Tea club will be oolong and black teas. The 2020 October club box has 185 grams of tea, all oolongs. Comparison Tasting of Masu Wild Style Black Tea from Old Ways Tea

I have a mound of Old Ways Tea packets tempting me every time I look at it, but I also have the urge to hoard my treasure. After sorting through, I found a 3 year selection of Masu Wild Style Black tea. Storage wise, I left these packets in coolish room temperature. Is aged black teas a thing? Sort of, maybe unintentionally. I know some who dislike black tea that’s over a year old. Generally, I find pressed black teas really get good after a year. I’ve had some of my unintentional aged blacks from 2014 to 2016 and all… Continue reading, hoot!

2019 Spring Gao Shan Rou Gui Oolong from Old Ways Tea

The tea review for today is Old Ways Tea’s Spring 2019 Gao Shan Rou Gui. This Rougui sports a lighter roast and tea material from one of the higher altitudes in Wuyishan. Leaf and Steeping Method Gorgeous leaf, look at those fall colours! Far away, the tea smells like peanut shells, but when I jam my face in the leaves it smells like fruit leather. For gongfu ratio, I dumped the entire packet in my gaiwan, clocking in at 1 gram of leaf per 12.5ml of vessel size. From there, I steeped with boiling water. The hot leaf smells like… Continue reading, hoot!

2008 Da Hong Pao Aged Oolong from Old Ways Tea

Today’s tea is an aged oolong – 2008 Da Hong Pao (aka Big Red Robe) from Old Ways Tea. This tea was stored in Wuyishan for 8 years, then reroasted. I say this every time with Old Ways Teas, but I have a hard time drinking them as they are so good I want to save them as rewards to myself. When I get vendor samples I fly off with the box like I got away with murder. Many thanks, Old Ways Tea. Leaf and Steeping Method The leaves of the 2008 Da Hong Pao have a dry-aged scent to… Continue reading, hoot!

2019 Jin Mu Dan Oolong from Old Ways Tea

What is Jin Mu Dan? I went in thinking this is a black tea like Jin Jun Mei, but this is a roasted oolong from Wuyishan, China. Old Ways Tea’s Jin Mu Dan, aka Golden Peony, is crafted by the Tea Research Institute of the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences to be thick in texture and has a floral scent. Leaf and Steeping Method The leaf of Jin Mu Dan Oolong smells like bread crusts and floral citrus osmanthus. I used a heavy leaf style, going 1 gram of leaf per 12ml of vessel size, gongfu steeped in boiling water.… Continue reading, hoot!

2019 Purple Da Hong Pao Wuyi Oolong from Old Ways Tea

Purple Da Hong Pao is an offshoot varietal from classic Da Hong Pao oolong. Old Ways Tea’s 2019 Purple Da Hong Pao, in particular, had its roast job in August 2019. Leaf and Steeping Method The dry leaf smells like roasted cream, with the roast smells potent without being burnt or ashy. I’m drooling and damn excited to drink this tea. I didn’t know how much I needed Purple Da Hong Pao until I smelled it. I used 1 gram of leaf per 12ml of vessel size, aiming to do chaozhao style and “fill the gaiwan”, However, I had concerns… Continue reading, hoot!
