Kenyan Black Tea is a fair trade, hand processed tea by Kenyan farmers, which is directly sold by JusTea, a Vancouver Canada based tea company.
First off, a cheer from Oolong Owl for a Vancouver based tea company – My hometown!
Second, JusTea has just started a crowd funding campaign. Here is the model they are aiming for:
You can access the campaign by visiting the JusTea site or via JusTea’s Facebook page.
Let’s check out the tea!
Our Great Horned Owl is going to help with the review!
Dry Leaf
The Kenyan Black Tea has a light scent woodsy scent with a little stone fruit sweetness. The tea leaf is tightly dried black leaves accented with a little orange.
Steeping Instructions
I could not find steeping instructions for this tea, so I used my default steeping method: gravity steeper, 200F water for 2:45 minutes. I was aiming for 3 minutes, but at the taste test at 2:30 minutes I thought it was good.
The cup comes out a flat tree bark brown colour which smells very fragrantly earthy and woodsy. I also discovered Great Horned Owl really loves showing off his good, distinctive angle.
Interestingly, the tea colour is more of an orange in a small vessel, I highly suggest to serve Kenyan black tea this way to show off the lovely colour!
Taste of Justea’s Kenyan Black Tea
Brisk and fresh! Kenyan Black Tea is quite full flavored and robust. It sips in fresh with a sweet cedar wood-barky mixed with malty flavor. At the end of sip I’m getting a hint of cocoa notes. There is a light astringency, say a 3/10 on the Astringe-o-meter that lingers after each sip. At first, I thought the dryness would be a 1/10, but more I sip, it becomes more dry.
Comments
JusTea‘s Kenyan Black tea is a solid, brisky black tea. I found Kenyan Black tea to be quite fresh and I love the fact it is right off the farm. This is the tea for Black tea lovers that would also love a fair trade tea!
To get your hands on this Kenyan Black Tea, check out the JusTea site. By the way, there are 2 blends that are also available with the JusTea campaign: Kathryne Kenyan Earl Grey and African Chai. The campaign ends October 18th, 2013.
Bonus:
Delicious afternoon tea! Great Horned Owl and I found out that Kenyan Black Tea pairs very well with chocolate biscuits!
