Plum Blossom White is a jasmine flower, plum flavored tea blend with jasmine green tea and shou mei white tea mix. This unique floral and fruity white tea blend is from Simple Loose Leaf.
First off, Simple Loose Leaf has a few new monthly tea subscription plans. The one I’m on I selected the tea I wanted and I got a different tea each month, which works out to a great deal overtime. Simple Loose Leaf now also has a curated plan going on that gives you a menu of 5 teas to try each month – you can select 2 or all 5! In the end, Simple Loose Leaf gives you the ability to try many teas in their huge tea line up, great for someone new to teas and not sure what you like yet!
I selected this tea as part of my tea subscription from Simple Loose Leaf as it looked really cool – plum blends are uncommon, plus a floral combination sounds fantastic. Let’s give this tea a tasting, my tea peeps!
Dry Leaf
Plum Blossom White tea has a sweet, fruit leather like smell. I can’t really tell its plum at this point. The leaves are a darker white, large and spacious. My photo is darker than in real life. Lighting was not my friend today.
Steeping Instructions
Okay, I was a little scared steeping this tea. Simple Loose Leaf states for white tea 200F for 2 to 3 minutes. 200F is really hot for what I’m used to for steeping a white. I personally steep around 175F to 185F. Plus, this blend has some jasmine green in it. I decided to steep Plum Blossom White tea as per the white tea instructions, and hoped for the best. Sometimes, just following the instructions is best.
I went a little heavy on leaf here as the leaf was pretty spacious and light, so around 2 heaping teaspoons for a 12oz mug.
The smell of Plum Blossom White is deliciously light, fruity and floral with a lovely golden colour. I tasted the tea at the 2 minute steeping mark, and let it steep for another 30 seconds, which tasted perfect steeping to me.
Tasting of Plum Blossom White Tea
Alright, this has to be the hottest I’ve drank a white tea before in a long time. After letting the tea cool for a few minutes, I discovered this blend to be very delicious. Plum Blossom White tea sips in light, slowly developing a full flavored, juicy taste. The shou mei white is flavorful with a hint of refreshing. As the tea’s flavors develop, I get a light purple plum flavor that picks up into a floral. I find the jasmine here is hard to figure out, as it blends with the plum nicely. I’d give this floral a 4/10 on the Floral-o-meter – it has a strong flavor, like licking plum juice off a flower. A slight astringency end of sip, 1/10 astringe-o-meter, which helps the tea flavors linger longer in the mouth. Oh yes, I get floral plum burps from this tea!
The plum somewhat tastes artificial here, however I find the floral masks it a bit. Also, plum flavored tea tends to have an artificial edge to it, with this blend being a little less artificial than other plum tea blends I’ve had.
Cold Steeped: I promptly forgot I had a tumbler of Plum Blossom White cold steeping in the fridge. Despite the 24 hour steeping, the tea came out quite well. Plum Blossom White cold steeped has much more floral flavor, around a 5/10 on the Floral-o-meter, with a fruity sweet edge. Quite lovely! I’d cold steep this tea again!
Comments
This Tea Owl quite enjoyed Simple Loose Leaf‘s Plum Blossom White. It’s a relaxing, refreshing white that has an interesting twist of fruity plum and floral. Light, yet full of flavor too! This tea would be great as an afternoon tea or a late night treat. Plum Blossom White also makes a great cold steep! If you are a white tea blend drinker, you’ll enjoy Plum Blossom White as much as I did!
Bonus: You must be this tall to drink tea.
