Higuchi Black Oolong from Yunomi – Tea Review

One can never have enough oolong! When one thinks of oolong, you probably think of oolong being from Taiwan or China, maybe Thailand. Today’s oolong is from Japan – Higuchi Black Oolong from Yunomi! Japanese oolongs aren’t something one sees often – checking around it seems Japanese oolongs are a special product and tea farmers don’t make much of them. This particular Japanese black oolong has a longer fermentation time than the other Japanese oolongs. The tea is grown in the Shige Prefecture with an altitude of 400 meters/ 1300 feet. Dry Leaf Higuchi Black Oolong dry leaf smells like plums… Continue reading, hoot!

Wild Arbor Oriental Beauty Oolong from Tea Setter – Tea Review

Today’s oolong review is Tea Setter’s Wild Arbor Oriental Beauty Oolong, a tea grown in Wuliang Mountains of Yunnan, China. The other day I was talking with a tea vendor and they mentioned Oriental Beauty oolong. I haven’t had an oriental beauty oolong in awhile, so it stuck in my mind. DRINK ME, the delicious oxidized pretty oolong. Sadly, I still don’t have a standby oriental beauty oolong, I’m still sampling away, looking for one that’ll make me fall in love. Let’s try Tea Setter’s Wild Arbor Oriental Beauty Oolong! Dry Leaf The dry leaf of  Wild Arbor Oriental Beauty Oolong features a very dark… Continue reading, hoot!

Hwang Cha Gold Oxidized Korean Tea from Hankook Tea

Hwang Cha Gold Oxidized Korean Tea is a partially oxidized and pan fired tea. This particular tea from Hankook Tea is a first flush Sejak and was hand harvested in April 2014. So is Hwang Cha Gold Oxidized Korean Tea an oolong? Black tea? Taste wise, I would lean towards an oolong – world of tea has a great article on Hwang Cha’s classifications according to how this tea is processed. Dry Leaf The dry leaf of Hwang Cha Gold Oxidized Korean Tea smells sooo good! This tea has a rich brown, almost black colour in delicate curled and twisted shapes. The smell is an… Continue reading, hoot!

Laoshan Roasted Oolong from Verdant Tea – Tea Review

Laoshan Roasted Oolong is an oolong from the Laoshan Village in the Shandong Province of China. This particular oolong, if you are familiar with Verdant Teas, is from the He family tea farm. The oolong I’m tasting today is actually the 2013 harvest, but the 2014 is available for purchase at this time. I purchased Laoshan Roasted Oolong awhile back, yet it has been elusive to me. I keep moving it in my tea stash and when I felt like I was ready to try it I couldn’t find it – this happened at least 4 times. Today I was like, “Okay,… Continue reading, hoot!

Singbulli Oolong Darjeeling from Single Origin Teas – Oolong Owl Tea Review

Singbulli Oolong Darjeeling is an organic oolong from the Singbulli tea estate. This tea is sold by Single Origin Teas, online tea seller based in Texas. I’ve never had a Darjeeling Oolong so I’m quite excited to try this tea! Dry Leaf Wow beautiful tea! Singbulli Oolong Darjeeling looks close to an Oriental Beauty with colours of deep brown, silver, reddish brown and golds. Steeping Instructions I decided to go with my personal go-to western oolong steeping method for this tea – 190F for 2.5 minutes. The colour of Singbulli Oolong Darjeeling came out a clear deep gold with a light floral… Continue reading, hoot!

Apricot Oolong from Sterling Tea – Oolong Owl Tea Review

Apricot Oolong is blend of tea, dried peach & apricot pieces, and marigolds. This fruity tea blend is sold by Sterling Tea, online tea seller based in Texas. Little bit of confusion here – right on the box it says “Green Tea” but it also says Oolong. Green oolong? The website shows a different packaging which doesn’t mention green tea. I’m excited to try some fruity teas that are in season – oh man, I wish I had better access to peaches and apricots. I know they are in season now and ripe for canning! Anyways, lets have some tea! Dry Leaf… Continue reading, hoot!

Organic Medium Oolong from Arum Tea – Tea Review

Organic Medium Oolong is a 50% oxidized oolong sold by Arum Tea. This oolong is grown in a single estate tea plantation located in Halimun Mountain, West Java Indonesia. This is another tea I got from the World Tea Expo! Indonesian teas are very good, and I got pretty crazy over this medium roast oolong, as with the name sake of Oolong Owl, I love a good dark oolong. Arum Tea also has a light roast oolong, black and green tea – I’ll review those at another time. Dry Leaf These oolong wads are huge! Organic Medium Oolong has a bread crust toasty scent. Steeping… Continue reading, hoot!

Four Seasons Oolong from Single Origin Teas – Oolong Owl Tea Review

Four Seasons Oolong is a Taiwanese oolong grown in the Nantou region. This lightly fermented oolong is sold by Single Origin Teas – an online tea seller based in Texas. When I saw the name of this oolong, I wondered what “Four Seasons” means. Does it take a year to make? Does it evoke rain and snow while the flowers sprout and the leaves fall? According to Teapedia, Four Seasons is translated from Si Ji Chun. Si Ji Chun oolong can come out consistent in quality, regardless of the season. Cool! Dry Leaf Single Origin Teas’ Four Seasons Oolong has a soft… Continue reading, hoot!

Tea Star Oolong from Justea – Oolong Owl Tea Review

Tea Star is a pesticide free, direct trade oolong that is a hand tied, world’s first bag-less tea bag. This really cool oolong is from Justea – Vancouver, BC based tea seller of direct trade Kenyan Teas. While I was at the World Tea Expo I saw the Tea Star! It tasted amazing, the concept is really cool, as well as the tea being hand tied. With that said, there is a lot of love put into this tea. I’ve reviewed Justea in the past during their crowd funding campaign. Since then they have cooperatively built a tea processing kitchen with the tea farmers… Continue reading, hoot!
