2009 Menghai Dayi Yellow Box Tuocha Shou Puer

I purchased 2009 Menghai Dayi Yellow Box Tuocha Shou Puer way back in early 2013 from Mandala Tea. This tuocha and a cake of 2012 Wild Monk were my first puer cakes, believe it or not. As I am crazy and hoarder-like, I never sampled my 2009 Menghai Dayi. There is nothing special about it other than was my first shou cake. It was only $12 for this 100gram tuocha. I did open the box and examined the tea. A part of me chickened out on how official this tea looks – it’s got paperwork and holo stickers. Examining the packaging, I… Continue reading, hoot!

2017 Nannuo Mini Mushroom Shou Puer from Crimson Lotus Tea

I had a session of 2017 Nannuo Mini Mushroom Shou Puer when I met up with Crimson Lotus Tea doing tastings at Phoenix Tea. I was impressed with the shou and was given three shrooms to play with. I was warned that one mushroom is plenty for a session, but I can try two at my own risk. I drank all three Nannuo Mini Mushrooms and had to have more. I beelined to their booth at the Northwest Tea Festival and bought 2 packages. The 2017 Nannuo Mini Mushrooms is made up of a blend of aged material, some as old… Continue reading, hoot!

2017 Nancai Ancient Sheng Puer from Essence of Tea

With my last Essence of Tea order, I got a free sample of 2017 Nancai Ancient Sheng puer. This tea apparently comes from old wild trees. It is promised to have a strong flavor, qi, bitterness, and aging potential. Dry Leaf and Steeping Method The 2017 Nancai Ancient puer’s dry leaf is strongly fruity smelling with a bit of zest to it. I used 1 gram of leaf to 15 ml of vessel size. I used 208F/98C water. Why not full boil? My kettle is junk and was flipping out trying to hold 212F/100c. The hot leaf smells fruity and a touch of… Continue reading, hoot!

2017 Farmer Direct Tea Sheng Puer from White2tea

2017 puer is nuts. We got so much selection this year for young sheng, that I’ve been busy drinking it all and getting gut rot. I’ve drunk a good selection of White2Tea’s 2017 line now, so I am starting with what I found is a good mid-range tea. I got 2017 Farmer Direct Tea (FDT) as a bonus sample with purchase. I was a high roller this year and only bought the expensive White2Tea shengs to try, which I slightly regret as FDT turned out to be pretty good. Farmer Direct Tea. I’m sure the name of this tea really… Continue reading, hoot!

Amoda Monthly Tea Box and Golden Turmeric Ginger Tea

Amoda Tea Box is a monthly subscription box based in Vancouver Canada. Since I last review them, they now have their own teas that focus on primarily herbal, matcha, and wellness blends. The subscription boxes similar as before, sourcing high-quality teas from small independent tea vendors. Today I am going to drink a subscription box and a wellness blend. June 2017 Amoda Monthly Tea Box This is the June Box, reviewed in October because I am seriously backlogged since World Tea Expo. Willapia White Lavender is from Beach house Tea Co, and is a blend of white peony, lemon verbena, wild… Continue reading, hoot!

August 2017 White2Tea Club feat. Mid 2000s Sheng Puer

The August 2017 White2tea club is another learning experience box. This month contains two mid 2000’s sheng puer to compare storage and compression. The Fangcha is dry stored tightly compressed brick with little information known other than it is smokey. The traditional Bingcha is said to be Yiwu origin, loosely pressed, with less compression and humid storage. Yet another excuse to have some double gaiwan fun, let’s steep! Dry Leaf The fangcha is in a spiffy brick. Flipped over, it has warts! I was warned this brick was a PITA to break, but my folding puer knife got through it… Continue reading, hoot!

2015 Pretty Girls Shou Puer from White2Tea

I purchased White2Tea’s 2015 Pretty Girls shou puer at launch, and it got lost in the back of my pumidor, along with Brown Sugar and Red Shroom. This puer is one of their most expensive shous, clocking in $39 for 200 grams. I overheard that “Pretty Girls” is some sort of reference that flies right over my west coast head. However, the wrapper art of Pretty Girls has a nice robin on the front. I was inspired to finally give this puer a try as my house is under siege by bird turf war since the spring. As with many… Continue reading, hoot!

2012 Noble Mark Shou Puer from Mandala Tea

Everyone likely remembers their first. Way back when, and likely you can dig through this blog’s early posts, I bought my first puer cakes through Mandala Tea. Garret is super awesome and helped me out, and it is when I bought their 2012 Wild Monk Sheng puer. I quickly sunk further down the pu-hole and bought samples of all Mandala Tea’s house puer. Noble Mark is one of my first favorite shous that caused me to stock up to later. I didn’t even review this tea on Oolong Owl despite it being one of my favorites. I did review Special… Continue reading, hoot!

2016 Space Girls Sheng Puer from Crimson Lotus Tea

So either it was my slow owl butt at reviewing things or people went ham on buying out all the Crimson Lotus Tea’s 2016 Space Girls sheng. I had the review written, then saw it was sold out, and stalled on posting even longer. Then I thought I shouldn’t let my tasting notes go to waste, and at least you all can get more of an idea of Crimson Lotus Tea’s tastes. EDIT: There was a restock!  There are more Space Girls! GO GO GO! What is unique about 2016 Space Girls Sheng Puer, in particular, is there are 4… Continue reading, hoot!

2017 Teabook Raw Puer

Today’s review is an entry level raw/ sheng puer from Teabook. 2017 Teabook Raw Puer is a 100 gram cake made of spring Lincang area material. To start off, this cake is affordable it is only $10.95. Teabook also has a ripe/ shou puer for 200 grams for $9.75. I got this little cake at the PDX Tea Fest and had it stashed for about a month. Dry Leaf and Steeping Method The 2017 Teabook Raw Puer is pressed loosely, so the leaf breaks off easy. No special tools needed, I was able to break a chunk off with my fingers. Close… Continue reading, hoot!
