2020 Moon Waffles White Tea from White2tea

My love of Yunnan White tea knows no bounds! I blind purchased a cake of 2020 Moon Waffles, a bud-heavy Yunnan white tea that is pressed into a convenient thin waffle pattern.

I am a fan of White2tea’s Waffles shou, so it was exciting to see a white tea waffle!

Leaf and Steeping Method

The cake is gorgeous with the dark leaves mixed with furry silver buds, all with a faintly floral scent. Thankfully, it is not difficult to snap off squares of white tea.

For gongfu style, I used 1gram of leaf per 20ml of vessel size, steeped in boiling water. With the introduction to hot water, the Moon Waffle leaves smell strongly fruity and sweet.

Tasting of White2tea’s 2020 Moon Waffles White Tea

First, Second, and Third Infusion: Moon Waffles has a sweetened condensed milk note and dense thick texture with a fresh bouquet of buttercups, carnations, and baby’s breath floral. After drinking, the floral notes deepen and linger, eventually overtaking the milky sweet tastes.

Fourth Infusion: Moon Waffles starts to get astringent here, there is a bit of a tickling dryness in the throat creeping up the tongue. The main flavor is floral with creamy sweet milk in the background.

Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Infusion: For the final infusions, Moon Waffles is full blown astringent heavy that seizes up the tongue and the tea leaving a powdery mouthfeel. The tea itself tastes of oat hay and milk. If I reset my palate, the tea is awesomely sweet milky before it rips into astringent terror.

Comments

White2tea’s 2020 Moon Waffles White tea is a creamy and floral heavy white tea and it is conveniently packaged for easy breaking and drinking. There is also a 2021 Moon Waffle available.

I quite enjoyed Moon Waffles and am happy I purchased it, though I’ll probably let it go into the white pumidor to hopefully age some more – as is this tea is great if you love creamy sweet white teas.
