How to use the Menna One

Pros of the Menna One Loose Leaf Travel Tea Tumbler

Steep Stop Resteep Ability is Awesome! This feature is why you are buying this tumbler. My favorite use has been filling it with hot water and tea without steeping, then letting the tea infuse in an hour or so when I am ready.

I tested how well the infuser works, filling it with 6 grams of rolled oolong, and leaving it closed off from water for 3 hours. In cold water, the leaf was completely dry, so Menna’s filter design works. I redid the test with boiling water and upon opening the leaf smelled awesome as it was warmed. The hot temperature made some condensation or sweating, but the leaves were felt slightly damp but not enough to unfurl or steep.

Leak Proof – The Menna One is 100% leak proof! This travel tea tumbler I am confident to let roll around in my purse. With the lock switch, there is no danger of the flip lid popping open.

Cons of the Menna One Loose Leaf Travel Tea Tumbler

This Tea Tumbler is Complicated – This is the first tea tumbler I simply could not get working out of the box. I couldn’t get the infusing baskets off, I read the manual and still couldn’t figure it out until I watched Menna’s videos.

I got both infuser baskets stuck together numerous times (needs to be in the open position before taking it apart and both infusers need to lock in / line up with indicator dots), and I’ve overflowed a few times (cannot pass the fill line). There are visual indicators for where things should line up, but it is a busy tumbler and takes more force than expected to tighten things, especially for the first couple of uses.

Infuser basket is small – I ran into issues of my big leafy teas, like rolled oolongs, being unable to out expand in the infuser basket, leading to not great tasting infusions. 5 grams (1.5 teaspoons) of high mountain oolong was pushing the limits of the infuser. For the majority of tea drinkers, this should not be much of an issue but I personally drink a lot of high-quality white, oolong, and sheng puer and ran into issues with the infuser.

Other Considerations / Mixed Reviews

Large Size but for Small Capacity – Menna One is the same size as many other travel tea tumblers, but it is 12oz while those are 16oz. Maybe it is my brain as well as the weight of all the parts, but I keep thinking I have more tea. If you do not use the infuser, you’ll get closer to 16oz.

Lots of Parts – Menna One has a lot of working parts that can go wrong, trap tea smells, and need cleaning. If you follow the directions and clean often you should be fine. Thankfully, this travel tea tumbler is dishwasher safe.

Heat Retention – In comparison to other stainless steel travel tea tumblers, Menna One doesn’t hold heat as long. I believe this is due to the infusers taking a lot of room, so you cannot completely fill the tumbler.

Starting Temperature = 209F / 98c, environment = 67F / 19c
1 hour = 180F / 82c
2 hour = 164F / 73c
3 hours = 149F / 65c
4 hours = 137F / 58c
5 hours = 130F / 54c
6 hours = 125F / 52c

That said, you got an hour of hot steeping temperature, but you will reach a pleasant drinking temperature sooner, with the perks of a stainless steel tumbler.

Resteeping – Yes, you can easily resteep your leaves but for best results, I needed to lift the filters to drain the tea. Even with the ability to stop the exposure to water, the leaves continue to steep within the infuser with the trapped water.

Does it Gongfu?

For those who desire a more technical, heavy leaf and resteep tea brewing, in theory yes, the Menna One Tea Tumbler can gongfu style. In practice, only low leaf ratios and certain teas due to the small infuser basket. I wouldn’t do any teas that are big, like maocha sheng or rolled oolong. As mentioned above, in order to do the perfect resteep you need to drain out the infuser, so it is fiddly if you are going for many infusions. All things considered, Menna One does a mean grandpa / lazy style, but looks like a regular tumbler.

Comments

Menna One Travel Tea Tumbler is perfect for those who want a travel tumbler to easily start or stop the tea leaves infusion with just a twist. This travel tea tumbler works best with standard grade teas and blends, but you’ll run into problems with big leafy teas due to the small infuser basket.

Once I got the hang of using the Menna One, I found it became one of my favorite tea tumblers for leaving the house as I can delay infusing my teas and stop them from oversteeping. At home, I used it for undercover grandpa / lazy style during Zoom meetings.
