Nannuo Moonlight White from West China Tea

Today’s tea is a Moonlight White (Yue Guang Bai) from Farmer Li Shulin, via West China Tea. This white tea is grown in Nannuo Mountain, Yunnan, China.

A number of West China Tea’s teas are from Li Shulin, so there are lots to explore if you want to deep dive into Nannuo teas. After I received these teas, I found out that Li Shulin had a tragic fire – losing his home, tea harvest, and equipment. There is a GoFundMe to help support his return to tea farming. I have more Li Shulin’s teas as I was hoping to do comparison tastings, but wanted to get this info out there first.

Leaf and Steeping Method

Nannuo Moonlight White has an apple spice and book scent.

I used 1 gram of leaf per 20ml of vessel size, gongfu steeped in boiling water. After an infusion, the tea smells like pears and old books.

Tasting of West China Tea’s Li Shulin Nannuo Moonlight White

First, Second, and Third Infusion: The flavor is light and sweet, but also crisp. Nannuo Moonlight White has a creamy asian pear taste with a snappy light honey finish and a lip balmy texture. With each infusion, the tea moves towards a dried date taste.

Fourth and Fifth Infusion: Nannuo Moonlight White still has a light profile but certainly a fruity white tea. The flavor is of dates, honey, and paperback books. Some sips have a stale apple cider note, while others have the taste of crisp linen and pears.

Sixth Infusion: I let this one steep for 15 minutes to see how it changes and I got an amber colour

Nannuo Moonlight White tea is sharply woodsy, with more dates and a hint of bitter medicinal flavor. The profile is still on the lighter side and the aftertaste is gently sweet.

Comments

Nannuo Moonlight White Is a fruity leaning Yue Guang Bai that is very easy to steep and drink with a delicious creamy thick texture. This tea is quite different than other moonlight whites as they tend to be more floral or oxidized heavier to be malty. I’ve linked the 30gram option, but this Moonlight white is also available in sample or bigger sizes.

I quite enjoyed this tea and am excited to explore more of West China Tea’s offerings.
